Symbolising love, grace, bravery, and admiration, these flowers are also known in French as Les oeillets de poète (Poet’s Carnations). The term "oeillet," or "eye," refers to the contrasting colour of the flower's center, with some suggesting the name honours Saint William or William Shakespeare. 

Sweet William flowers are not only edible but also abundant in nectar, attracting birds, bees, and butterflies.
